I would have thought that the letter's backgrounds should merge somehow, maybe similarly blurry with the horizon in about the same place. Bit like stitching a panorama. Not easy, as the world is not made of letters!
We were told specifically that we should use different depth of field in some of the shots and that each photo should stand alone as a photo in its own right. The letters also had to relate in some way to the word. You're right, not easy!
